An earthquake in Armenia caused a school building to collapse like a pack of cards. There were no signs of survivors. Nevertheless one man started clearing the rubble with his bare hands. He was the father of one of the children buried beneath the wreckage. He had so often promised his son, "Whenever you need me, I'm there for you."

Other desperate parents stood round weeping. They constantly told the father: "Give up!

There's no point in working like that!" But he refused to do so. His love of his son was so great, that he continued stubbornly and determinedly. After more than 36 hours he pushed a large piece of debris to one side with all the might that remained in him and shouted: "Armand, Armand!" An answer was heard immediately: "Dad, it's me! Help us!" After a short while he managed to reach his son and thirteen other totally exhausted children. They were in a hollow space under the piles of rubble. But they had been finally rescued!

This account is an apt illustration of the love of God towards us. He is there ready, waiting to save us. We may not be buried under rubble, but we are under the great burden of our sins that separate us from God and eternal life with Him in heaven. The Saviour, His Son Jesus Christ, opened up the way for us by dying on the cross, so that whoever believes on Him, obtains the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
