The content of the Bible

The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, wounds and bruises and putrefying sores. They cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them . He sent his word and healed them.
Isaiah 1:5.6; Psalm 107:19.20

The content of the Bible
A person whom I advised to read the Bible remarked: "There are some strange, even crude stories in the Bible."

It is true. Primarily in the Old Testament we find stories that are far from pleasing, but scandalous and even reprehensible. But if they were not there, the Bible would not be true. It presents people as God sees them, without the hypocritical mask behind which they often hide. Murder, adultery, rape, alcoholism, idolatry, lies, betrayal - we are spared nothing, so that we do not get a false impression of the extent of the evil in man's heart. God, who always speaks the truth, wants us to recognize ourselves in the unflattering portrait of several persons whose behaviour He condemns. Even if His servants are involved, He omits nothing.

The worst of all the accounts in the Bible, and the one that reveals most clearly man's revolt against God, is it not the crime committed against His Son who came to earth to make His love known?

Against this despairingly gloomy background stands out the pure, spotless story of Jesus, as the gospels present Him. The contrast between His attitude, His words, His feelings and ours shines forth at every step of His pathway. It is a wonderful story that eclipses His Words, His feelings, man's miserable adventure: let us read it with adoration!

To you is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God;

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
