Let us call her Mrs Brooks...

What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16:26

Let us call her Mrs Brooks. She was over ninety, no longer able to walk and so bound to her wheelchair, but she was top fit mentally. She was humorous and good at repartee. She had her opinion of the other inmates of the senior citizens' home where she lived: "They are nearly all not right in the head," she explained with corresponding gestures.

Then she told us that she had planned everything for her death. She would leave her body to the medical faculty of the university for research purposes. One of our group asked her if she had made arrangements for her soul, as it was important at her age! Mrs Brooks failed to answer, which was most unusual for her. Now she seemed irritated, even annoyed.

Mrs Brooks was old; she was well looked after, still fit and had everything under control, even regarding her death, as she thought. But she had forgotten the most important thing!

Many people resemble Mrs Brooks. They are old and have a good constitution. But they ignore the question of the afterlife. They have worked out their checklist for their life and for dying but, being unconcerned about eternity, without caring for the future of their soul.

Yet God is still ready and waiting to save the likes of Mrs Brooks.

Today's reading: Psalms 99, 100 & 101

Given modern trends and need for details, most institutions have various books in which records are kept and can be retrieved in years to come. Every...More
