Behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

It was a very dark night, darker than we know in our modern world, and it was unique compared with countless nights before and after. Suddenly, brilliant light shone forth, indescribable glory and loud voices, understandably causing great fear.

Within seconds a grandiose change from darkness to light, from silence to jubilation had taken place. The shepherds were awakened from their apathy by an unexpected spectacle.

What did they hear at first? "Do not be afraid!" Sensitively, their fear was taken from them: they were pacified and able to take in amazing words. How often has God expressed the words, "Fear not!" to reach us in our loneliness and comfort us in our despondency! He wishes to attract the attention of the pre-occupied, calm those under stress and fortify the fearful.

The angel said, I bring you good tidings of great joy", the very words that those fearful shepherds needed! And each of us, too, needs such wonderful words from God. So much information today is intended for specialist groups; but here we have a message addressed to "all people".
