This divine, miraculous event, that the Word,...

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
John 1:14

This divine, miraculous event, that the Word, the Son of God, became Man, had to be fulfilled in Bethlehem, the city of David, according to the prophecy of Micah. Now Mary, the woman chosen to be His mother, lived in Nazareth in Galilee.

God even used kings for the fulfilment of His counsel: through the edict of the emperor Augustus, Mary and Joseph were compelled to travel to Bethlehem, where Christ was to be born. There in that small market town a Child was born in sheer poverty, who, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, was the Son of God, the Saviour of the world. Not only did our Creator come down to us and dwell among sinners: He came in all humility. He, the Lord of glory, was laid in a crib.

They begrudged the newborn a suitable place to rest in Bethlehem, which was full of travellers at the time. Apart from a few shepherds, no-one took any notice of Him. But if the earth remained indifferent to such a Visitor, heaven was moved to pay tribute to this unique event. In the fields of Bethlehem angels' praise was heard, magnifying God's love that was thus revealed to mankind. The shepherds accepted the wondrous message, announcing with great joy: "To you is born a Saviour" (Luke 2, 10.11).

If only many today would recognize the Son of God, the Saviour, in the Child in the manger! They would bow down in adoration before Him who came down "to seek and save that which was lost" (Luke 19, 10).

Today's reading: Deuteronomy ch. 4, vv. 25 - 49

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
