A well-known bank’s advertisement began with...

O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me!
Isaiah 38:14

A well-known bank's advertisement began with these words: "But we were behind her!" The text explained: "The first step is always difficult." That is why Mrs X consulted us about her plans. She knew that she could rely on us as a partner in business. We backed up her financial planning in word and deed."

It was good to have the backing of a financially strong institution. But there are other problems that have nothing to do with money. They can suddenly affect anyone, like illness and finally death, even in mid-life. Who is behind us then?

Nursing staff and relatives know about the fear of dying, if they do not choose to leave the suffering alone when the time comes.

King Hezekiah of Judah underwent these hours of terror. It was he who expressed the words of today's verse. But he knew that he could pray to almighty God to undertake for him. And God graciously heard his prayer and prolonged his life.

Who is behind us in a case of illness or death? A bank is useless. Even if doctors do their best and apply the latest medical discoveries, they cannot, in the final instance, prevent death. There is, however, one Person ready to accompany us through the "valley of the shadow of death": Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. But we must know Him as our Redeemer and shepherd during our active life, if He is to be with us and take us to Himself, when we die.

Today's reading: Exodus 5:1-14 · Luke 2:1-7

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
