In a picture gallery two visitors were standing...

He who comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
Hebrews 11:6

In a picture gallery two visitors were standing in front of a painting that depicted the healing of a blind beggar reported in the gospel of Luke, chapter 18.

One of them had already been acquainted with the picture for some time. He asked his friend, "What do you consider the best thing in this painting?" His counterpart commented on various details, but his companion always said, "No!" Finally he gave the answer himself: "The best thing is the stick that has been thrown away. The beggar got rid of it when he heard the voice of the Lord Jesus calling him. He threw it away before he could see. That is faith. The blind man trusted Jesus Christ completely."

Other pictures of this biblical scene show the blind man still holding his stick in his hand. The Bible itself doesn't mention a stick at all! But the painter had very aptly depicted the faith of the man who believed that Jesus would heal him. He dropped his former support so as to stretch both hands out to his Saviour. He didn't doubt that the Lord would free him from his suffering and grant him his sight.

People constantly maintain that they cannot believe. Why? Many are not prepared to release what they are holding on to and do not acknowledge that without Jesus Christ they are lost eternally. Only when someone lets everything go in order to find salvation in Christ alone can he be helped. Jesus laid the foundation for our salvation at the cross of Calvary.

Today's reading: Exodus 13:11-22 · Luke 6:12-19

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
