Everyone knows that the stability of a house depends...

Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation.
Isaiah 28:16

Everyone knows that the stability of a house depends primarily on its foundation. A good foundation stands firm for centuries; a poor one causes the house to collapse. It is better not to build other than on a firm foundation.

This also applies to our life. We can build on our intelligence, health, ability, wealth or possessions, but also on our helpfulness, mercy or good works. But these will in no case stand firm for eternity.

The only reliable foundation for the edifice that is a person's life is Jesus Christ. Today's verse from the Bible refers to Him. The strength of the rock, Christ, is such that even the power of death can do nothing against it.

Just how can we build our life on this "rock"? The criminal crucified alongside Jesus Christ shows us. He had been condemned to death. His life was approaching its end. But he entrusted himself and his future to Christ. He surrendered fully to His grace: his life then stood on the rock of eternity. The Lord told him: "Today you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:43).

A criminal in paradise? Yes, since Christ settled his debt, by suffering God's punishment in His atoning death for all who trust in Him.

This "rock" will never sway. When all was done for man's salvation, He cried out, "It is finished!" After His burial He rose again on the third day and now lives for ever. He is our only sure foundation.

Today's reading: Exodus 14:15-31 · Luke 6:31-38

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
