Six tips for reading the Bible

Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things from your law.
Psalm 119:18

Six tips for reading the Bible
Pray before you even open your Bible. To understand what you read, you need the assistance of the Holy Spirit.

Read your Bible attentively. Take seriously all that is promised you, as well as the instructions you find and all the teaching that is new to you.

Read your Bible regularly. It is God's wish to give us spiritual food daily by means of His Word. Jesus Himself said: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).

Begin with the gospels. Do not be hindered by what you do not grasp straightaway. God normally reveals Himself step by step. He will not tell you everything at once. It is not unusual to find that the Bible contains thoughts that we fail to understand immediately. It is, after all, the Word of our almighty, omniscient God.

Look for the Lord Jesus in what you read in your Bible. Christ is the way to God and the all-important subject of the Bible. The Old Testament was written to announce and prepare for His coming. The New Testament testifies that He came.

Obey the message of the Bible. Any rebellion against God's will or His commandments is sin. Whoever submits to the teaching of the Bible honours God and can count on God's blessing.

Today's reading: Exodus 17:8-16 · Luke 7:36-50
