Lie and murder, truth and life

Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and death spread to all men because all sinned. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:12; 6:23

Lie and murder, truth and life
God placed Adam and Eve in a wonderful garden. He allowed them to eat the fruit of all the trees except one. And He forewarned them that they would die if they ate of it (Genesis 2:17). Then Satan instilled doubt in them: "You will not surely die. You will be like God" (Genesis 3:4.5). Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. Who spoke the truth? Later it became clear.

Eve gave birth to two sons, Cain and Abel. One day out in the fields Cain struck his brother Abel and killed him. God asked Cain where Abel was. He replied that he did not know. Sin and death had entered the world. Genesis teaches us that Adam eventually died (Genesis 5:5). Then the story of his descendants is told. We read, rather like a refrain: "He lived x years, and he died."

God had spoken the truth, and Satan had lied.

Today the world reveals the characteristics of the ruler it has chosen, Satan, the liar and murderer (cf, John 8:44). We need only listen to the news to confirm that our present world is struggling with murder and lies. Can one do anything but despair?

No! Listen: "He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live" (John 11:25), said Jesus, who is "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Jesus grants eternal life to all who put their trust in Him. That is the message of the gospel written for us all.

Today's reading: Exodus 30:17-38 · Luke 12:49-59
