God’s promise

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:24

God's promise
The precise wording of today's verse from the Bible is of great significance. Jesus Christ testifies that everyone who believes in Him has everlasting life and has passed from death into life. "Has" and "has passed" signify facts for the present time. There is no room for any doubt. We do not find words like "if" or "perhaps", which could raise the slightest doubt. Therefore everyone who believes in the Redeemer Jesus Christ can joyfully accept this statement and rest on its promise. He has been saved for all eternity.

Let us repeat: whoever believes on the Son of God already has eternal life. The passing from death into life has already taken place. Eternal life is thus not a future reward for any achievements on our part, but the gift of God for all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Eternal life is life of an entirely new quality and it is characterised by a living, trustworthy relationship with God. Whoever does not believe in the Son of God is "dead" in the sense that he has no relationship with God. Whoever has faith in Christ receives life and has fellowship with Him.

Can we really be sure that we have been saved eternally? We can indeed, for the apostle John wrote: "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13).
