Saul of Tarsus thought he was doing God a service...

Who are you, Lord?
Acts 9:5

Saul of Tarsus thought he was doing God a service by persecuting the disciples of Jesus. When he was on his way to Damascus for this particular purpose, a brilliant light from heaven suddenly shone on him, and he fell to the ground. A voice asked him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"

In his astonishment he asked, "Who are you, Lord?" And the answer was to change his life completely: "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting." Saul had never imagined that Jesus of Nazareth who had died by crucifixion was alive. But He had been received in heaven, and from there He appeared to Saul in great glory. This occurrence was the turning-point for Saul: from the zealous persecutor of Jesus he became His resolute follower.

For some days Saul was blind, but in his heart there was light, and he prayed to Jesus, the Son of God. When his sight returned, He was baptised and preached Jesus as the Son of God in the synagogues. Later God sent him to Asia Minor and Europe on various missionary journeys. Let us hear what Paul said in his sermon on the Areopagus in Athens:

"These times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained (i.e. Jesus Christ). He has given assurance of this to all by raising him from the dead" (Acts 17:30-31).

Anyone who as yet has no clear conception of Jesus Christ can prayerfully ask, "Who are you, Lord?" God will open his eyes and show him that His Son, Jesus Christ, is the Saviour of the world.

Today's reading: Exodus 36:1-13 · Luke 16:19-31
