Faith rewarded

The LORD repay your work, and a full reward will be given you by the LORD God under whose wings you have come for refuge.
Ruth 2:12

Faith rewarded
An account in the Bible tells how Naomi and her husband abandon Bethlehem to escape from famine to live in a neighbouring country. There the two sons marry Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth, who do not know their God. Naomi loses her husband, then her two sons. She later learns that God has ended the famine in her land and decides to return. She explains why to her daughters-in-law.

Ruth, who has heard Naomi speak of God's power towards His people, decides to accompany her. "Your people shall be my people, and your God my God," she said trustfully. Having arrived in Bethlehem as a stranger, she goes to glean ears of corn in the fields for their food. Now these fields belong to a believer, Boaz, who knows God's mind. He sees Ruth's sincere faith and expresses the blessing of the above verse. Through faith in God, Ruth has found refuge with him. God blesses her even more than she could hope, for Boaz proposes to marry her.

God is the same even today. He never turns any away who seek His help, not even as we are: sinners. He takes no pleasure in punishing sinners. Jesus said, "The one who comes to me I will by no means cast out" (John 6:37). "Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). If you take refuge under God's protection by accepting His Son, Jesus Christ, as your Saviour, you will find more than you ever hoped for.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 9:1-25 · Luke 21:29-38

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
