A helping hand
From the top of the mountain pass I have been watching a young Madagascan on a bicycle down in the valley. Numerous hairpin bends await him up to the summit. Occasionally he has to pedal hard against the forceful wind that is blowing that day. I certainly wouldn't change places with him! Then an open bush-taxi packed full with passengers slowly draws up behind him. The moment it is about to overtake the cyclist, a passenger at the back holds his hand out towards him. From that moment the ascent becomes much easier, and once he has reached the top, he can continue on his way joyfully.

Sometimes I am like that lad on his bike, worn out with fatigue. My life, strewn with difficulties, resembles that steep road with the contrary wind; I am often on the brink of exhaustion. But within my grasp there is a strong helping hand, that of the Lord Jesus.

I need only come to Him and maintain this bond of trust in Him, even if it is like holding on with one little finger of faith. That will be enough for His strength to become mine. His powerful aid, full of wisdom, is within my grasp every day and in every situation. It is there, inexhaustible and ever necessary, particularly when service for the Lord seems to me too difficult. If I put my confidence in Him, I shall get the help I need and hear Him say, "My strength is made perfect in weakness".
