Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (137)

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors - not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 8:12.13

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (137)
The flesh is still present and active in the Christian to enforce authority over him. Take this example:

A ship-owner sold the ship of which he was also the captain. He was granted the right to stay in one cabin, but not in any other area of the ship. The new owner and captain now had all the rights over the ship.

It was up to the new owner whether he permitted the former captain to leave his cabin to determine the course the ship took. The former strong-willed captain had his own ideas regarding the course and the destination. And he refused to give them up!

The new owner might be tempted to enjoy some pastimes with the former captain. He could even seek his advice in difficult situations and allow him on to the bridge. But he should be clear about one thing: the former captain will do all in his power to get the ship off its new course. Although having no right to do so, he will exploit any liberty he has.

Similarly, the Christian should beware of granting the flesh any opportunity to influence him. It has no right to do so. The slightest chance, any tampering with sin, will always prove disastrous. Under the guidance of the Spirit of God the believer must put the deeds of the body to death by rejecting any self-willed claim it makes.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 27:1-11 · Romans 3:1-8

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
