The importance of togetherness

God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.
Ephesians 2:4.5

The importance of togetherness
Social life is one of the essentials for every individual; it is, however, something quite normal. Living with others is a natural need of mankind. In the beginning God therefore created man and woman and brought them together, thus instituting the first social structure: the family. Our legitimate need to collaborate, sharing our ability and talents leads naturally to social life extending beyond the family: in towns, society and nations.

In the Old Testament God organised the life of the people of Israel after the exodus from Egypt by a law full of wisdom in which respect for others was paramount.

In the New Testament a further need of collective life arose for Christians. Having been saved by the work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came to earth, was put to death then raised to glory, believers gather together around that same living Jesus, though invisible, to worship, sing His praises and serve Him.

God desires a true relationship with man, not mere religion, but giving and receiving on both sides. He wishes to be a God close at hand, not just a concept. Let us live closely bonded with Jesus and with God.

Whatever our generation, let us be prepared to live peacefully with our families, our friends, our brothers and sisters in God's family, not merely for our advantage, but being ready to give to others, even our own selves, if necessary, just as Christ did.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 29:1-14 · Romans 4:1-8
