Whoever trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ receives...

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:24

Whoever trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ receives the forgiveness of his sins and eternal salvation. Yet some still wonder whether they might be lost after all. They do not dare to stifle their doubt with a decisive "No!" They are aware that their life of faith is not faultless and that they are not sinless even as Christians. This raises their doubts as to their eternal salvation.

What does God say about the matter in His Word? "The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable" (Romans 11:29). God will not take back a gift that He has once given! Eternal life is a gift of grace given to everyone who changes his way of thinking and manner of life by turning to God and believing in Jesus Christ.

"God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son" (1 John 5:11). Christ is the source of this life that the believer possesses in Him, not in himself. So it cannot be lost. Christ is "the true God and eternal life" (1 John 5:20). Christ and our new life are thus inseparably bound together.

Jesus Himself said of those who belong to Him: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them, out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no-one is able to snatch them out of my Father's hand" (John 10:27-30).

Today's reading: Jeremiah 29:15-32 · Romans 4:9-15
