Peace despite tribulation

These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 16:33

Peace despite tribulation
John's gospel, chapters 13 to 16, records what the Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples, who would be left here on earth after His return to heaven. He gave them various instructions for their life on the pathway of faith that also apply to us.

Today's text above was the conclusion of what He said, before He prayed to His Father in heaven (John 17). He passed on two important thoughts to encourage their hearts:

We have peace in Him. By means of His teaching in these chapters the eye of faith is directed towards heaven and brings us into communion with God our Father. He speaks of His return to His Father and promises to send the Holy Spirit from there. He reveals all these Christian privileges, so that we can claim them for our life of faith. As a result we enjoy profound inward peace, because our hearts are occupied with Christ.

In the world we have tribulation. The Lord Jesus leaves us on earth, so that, in dependence on Him, we bring forth fruit for God and witness for Him. We fulfil this service in a world that hates and rejects us for believing in Jesus. We are thus confronted with resistance from a godless world. This tribulation is, however, external; it cannot derive us of our inner peace. Because the Lord overcame the world at the cross, we can endure mockery and rejection and go forward courageously. We are standing on the side of the Victor.

The Psalm writes, I trust in You, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hand' (vv. 14-15 NKJV). As you walk with God you'll find that you spend more time waiting than you do receiving. And when you receive what you're waiting for, then...More

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
