Jesus Christ the righteous (2)

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1

Jesus Christ the righteous (2)
God's children have received divine life through regeneration at their conversion. In addition, they possess the Holy Spirit who indwells them. This gives them the prerequisite and strength necessary for refraining from sinning. Despite this, we know all too well that we can sin, because the old nature is still in us. In James 3:2 we read: "We all stumble", a fact that makes us ashamed.

When a believer sins, he does something that does not correspond to his character as a child of God. The Lord wants us to be ever conscious of this and to live up to this character in everyday life and not sin.

What if it should happen? Then our fellowship with the Father as children of God is greatly disturbed. The matter must be put in order. For this we need an advocate who pleads our case. He is Jesus Christ the righteous. Our Saviour bears this title in this connection, too.

As our advocate he makes us aware of our sin, so that we confess it before God, our Father. Then He can forgive us. In this way we are restored personally.

Because Christ is the righteous One, He carries out this service perfectly justly. He puts everything in order, fully maintaining God's rights and holiness. We can therefore face God again with a free conscience. What a relief that is for believers, and how gracious our God is!

Today's reading: Leviticus 13:29-44 · Psalm 59:10-18

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
