Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (146)

Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Romans 8:33.34

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (146)
This epistle places emphasis in many passages on the connection between the subject in hand and God. It deals with the gospel of God, God's righteousness, God's grace, God's glory and even God's wrath. Here God's children are designated as "God's elect". That being the case, any accusation brought by the devil, the "accuser" of the brethren (Revelation 12:10) must be unfounded.

In the case of justification, too, God is in the foreground. It is not stated here simply that the Christian is justified by faith, as in ch. 5:1, but "It is God who justifies". Who could therefore dare to condemn those whom God has long since pronounced free of all guilt?

Our attention is then directed to Christ. For the believer the victorious resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ are sufficient proof that his personal case with God has been settled once for all time.

Christ is still active in glory for those who belong to Him. He "makes intercession for us". On earth the Holy Spirit, who indwells believers, does so: "the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered". This twofold ministry serves Christians in the difficulties of their often troublesome life. It guarantees that the bond linking the believer with his Lord and with God is never broken.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Leviticus 18:1-30 · Psalm 66:8-20
