Landslips and scree avalanches caused by constant...

Your iniquities have separated you from your God.
Isaiah 59:2

Landslips and scree avalanches caused by constant torrential rain in mountainous districts frequently cut off houses or even whole villages from their surroundings. Streets and paths are blocked, and help can often come only from the air.

In people's lives there is also a blocked pathway: it is the way to God. What causes the blockage? Another form of nature - man's nature: sin! Our sins prevent contact with God. In this case, too, help can come solely from above.

What is sin? That murder and violent robbery are sins is understandable. Infidelity towards one's married partner is equally regarded as sin by many. But such coarse sins that affect our fellow men do not provide a clear idea of what God understands by sin: "Sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4).

Man wishes to be independent of God. He fails to ask after God and His standards. That is "lawlessness". So whatever anyone does in this attitude is sin in God's sight. This can mean that things that in man's opinion are permissible also hinder or prevent any contact with God.

There is, however, One who clears the hindrance from the pathway leading to God: Jesus Christ, of whom the Bible reports: "He was manifested to take away our sins" (1 John 3:5). His redeeming work at Calvary has opened up the way to God. Whoever admits his sins and confesses them to God can rest on Christ and His redeeming work by faith and rejoice that God is ever available for us to approach Him:

Today's reading: Leviticus 19:1-37 · Psalm 67:1-8

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, says to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. Jesus says to her, Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

We have not a high priest not able to sympathize with our infirmities, but tempted in all things in like manner, sin apart.

PROVOKING POSITIVE CHANGE

Change is one event that is constant in life. Change denotes movement from one state to another. There are two categories of change: positive and negative. Due to the fact that change can either be positive or negative, Africans would say: "Change is good for the poor but bad for the rich". Change in life is...More
