For years an elderly Indian used to wander...

O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true.
2 Samuel 7:28

For years an elderly Indian used to wander from one place to another begging for his daily bread. One day he reached a village, famished once again, and hastily devoured the bread they gave him. Then someone asked him what he had in the small, dirty bag hanging round his neck from a coloured ribbon. He said it was a charm that he had been given on returning from a battle and pulled out a folded scrap of paper that he handed to the questioner.

The latter started to decipher the faded writing. It turned out to be an official document of demobilisation from the American federal army. It was signed by George Washington himself and assured the Indian a lifelong pension. Had the man claimed the pension, he would have had sufficient means to live without having to roam around hungry and homeless.

How many people resemble that Indian! The Bible expresses God's promises and assurances, and yet they go without!

God's Word is eternal and absolute truth: all its promises are valid. But the forgiveness of sins, peace with God, eternal life and eternal glory that God wishes to grant everyone must actually be claimed. How? By consciously turning to God. We have to confess frankly that we have not led our life according to His will up to now and name the wrongs that we are aware of. Then we can rest assured that God has forgiven our guilt, for His Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for this purpose.

Today's reading: Leviticus 23:1-22 · Psalm 68:28-36
