An elderly sea-captain once explained how...

The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

An elderly sea-captain once explained how he found faith in Christ:

"I was converted only eight years ago, unfortunately. I had to spend two hours in a waiting-room in the port of Malmo in Sweden. To pass the time away I read the newspapers laid out there, but soon finished them. Then my eyes suddenly spotted a Bible lying there. Hesitantly I picked it up. And when I opened it, I heard an old man next to me whisper: ‘Look, Lord Jesus, someone has picked up your Word. Give him light, so that He finds you in it.'

"When I heard that, I threw the Bible down and stormed out of the door. What did that man want? What did he mean? His quiet prayer had made me feel uneasy. Until then Jesus Christ had meant little to me. That had made me conscious of it, and it disturbed me. It made me wonder. I went home, but couldn't shake off the thought of Jesus.

"In my home town I had an acquaintance who was a believer. I eventually visited him and asked him, ‘What have I to do with Jesus? What does He expect of me?' My friend explained that the Son of God came to earth to die for lost sinners and now expects us to turn to Him and confess the guilt of our life frankly to him. Then we can trust His redeeming work for forgiveness and follow Him joyfully. The grace of God led me to accept Jesus Christ as my Saviour and surrender my life to Him.

Today's reading: Leviticus 25:20-38 · Psalm 70:1-6

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
