The large stone before the opening of...

Because I live, you will live also.
John 14:19

The large stone before the opening of Jesus Christ's tomb had been sealed, and a guard placed to secure the tomb. However, not even these precautions taken by Jesus' enemies could prevent the Lord from rising victoriously from the dead and being seen by over five hundred eye-witnesses, who testified publicly that Christ was alive. Their reliable testimony is recorded in several passages of the Bible, notably in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8.

Martin Luther frequently had to struggle against severe fits of doubt and despondency. On such dismal days he found comfort in the word "vivit", i.e. "He lives". He used to chalk the word on his table and on doors and walls: "Vivit, vivit!" On one occasion when he was asked what it meant, he replied, "Jesus lives, and if He were not alive, I should not wish to live even one more hour. But because He lives, we shall also live through Him, as He Himself said: "I live, and you will also live."

The Lord gave His disciples this promise before His crucifixion and resurrection, when He prepared them for His return to heaven. They had received eternal life through faith in Him, and their life was inseparably linked with Himself and His life, even beyond physical death.

On an earlier occasion the Son of God had said: "He who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life" (John 5:24).

Today's reading: Joshua 2:14-24 · 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
