The mechanism of the heavens

Listen to this, o Job; stand still and consider the wondrous works of God. Do you know when God dispatches them, and causes the light of his cloud to shine? With him, have you spread out the skies, strong as a cast metal mirror? He hangs the earth on nothing.
Job 37:14.15.18; 26:7

The mechanism of the heavens
The stars obey extremely precise laws that astronomers have translated into scientific calculations. The regularity of their movements is one of the great marvels of creation. Their consistency in their orbit testifies the power and faithfulness of God, who constantly upholds the necessary conditions for maintaining life on earth. "God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years" (Genesis 1:14).

The study of the laws of gravitation set out by Newton is based on his faith in a God who maintains order in the whole of creation with infinite wisdom. When he communicated the results of his work to his friend Halley (after whom the famous comet is named), he knew that the latter could employ those laws to calculate the orbits of celestial bodies. He was certain that God would prove His faithfulness by the way he ruled the movement of the stars.

Man rejects his Creator. But God never tires of appealing to His creature: "Thus says the LORD, who created the heavens, who is God who formed the earth. I am the LORD, and there is no other a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me" (Isaiah 45:18.21).

Today's reading: Joshua 3:1-13 · 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

JESUS IN YOUR BOAT

No doubt, life in a sense is like the sea. A characteristic of the sea is that storms of varying degrees arise, putting the lives of those sailing on it in jeopardy of being drowned. In Jesus' Name, the storms of life will not be able to drown you, your family and your business. While literal storms are natural...More
