The ship’s anchor

In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength and my refuge, is God.This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.
Psalm 62:7; Hebrews 6:19

The ship's anchor
Whoever has spent some time by the sea knows the ship's anchor. It is exhibited in museums and in the open air. Some people have smaller ones to decorate their gardens, while larger ones remind us of the famous ships they were taken from.

There is an anchor in our village; it is large, well-made and painted black, but it is made of wood. Can you imagine any sailor taking it for use at sea? It has its advantages: it is light and easily transportable. But alas, it will not serve its purpose: it will not hold a boat, let alone a ship, but simply float on the water!

Have you an anchor for the ship that is your life? Something that will hold you firmly when a storm comes? It seems to me that too many people drift along with a wooden anchor.

What do you trust? Your strength and intelligence? Your wealth and possessions? Your family or firm friends? Or your health? All these things can be lost overnight. Accidents, catastrophes or warfare can suddenly deprive you of what you thought to be secure.

A reliable anchor must find a secure hold on firm ground - a foundation that is outside ourselves. I know of only one that is absolutely trustworthy: living faith in Jesus Christ. He is no longer on earth, but in heaven. No storms of any kind can unsettle Him. You will find in Him a sure hold that even goes beyond death.

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 14:1-17 · Psalm 87:1-7

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
