Thoughts on the Gospel of John (14)

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, What do you seek? They said to him, Rabbi (which is to say, when translated, teacher), where are you staying? He said to them Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and remained with him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
John 1:38.39

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (14)
Two of John's disciples had heard of Jesus and seen Him. They felt drawn towards Him and followed Him. We now discover the great interest that the Lord has in disciples who follow Him. He "turned" round to see them and speak to them. Just as then, He also takes note of those who follow Him today.

What is important is that we do so with purpose of heart (cf. Acts 11:23), and not merely to appear pious. The Lord occasionally tests our motives. Here He asked the disciples "What do you seek?" Nowadays difficulties in our life of faith similarly challenge and try us. What causes us to continue with the Lord? Do we think that, as Christians, we adhere to a "better religion", or are in a morally better company of Christians?

The disciples' counter-question clarifies their earnest intention to follow Jesus: "Where are you staying?" Obviously they sought no advantage for themselves, but sincerely desired to be with their Lord to become better acquainted with Him. Through occasional meetings or brief conversations we do not get to know people properly. We have to be with them for longer periods.

The Lord will have been pleased to hear the disciples' question. But He could not give them any address. Did He have a dwelling anywhere? Today Christ is in heaven, yet He has promised to be in the midst of those who gather together in His Name (cf. Matthew 18:20).

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 17:1-27 · Psalm 89:20-28

Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their...More

TOTAL COMPLIANCE REQUIRED

When we teach about tithes and first fruits, some people think that it is the pastor's way of making money but they are making a great mistake. When you put God first, He will make sure that your blessings are irreversible. But if you decide to give Him second place in your life, you may not be happy to see what...More

Like Paul,we don't need to parade our failures or to pretend they didn't happen. Instead, we can thank the Lord that through His grace and power, our past is forgiven, our presence is changed, and our future is bright with hope for all he has prepared for us. - David...More
