Applying this psalm to ourselves today, we see...

The LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11

Applying this psalm to ourselves today, we see believing Christians on the way to the Father's house in heaven. On this pathway God, our Father, is a sun and a shield for us. He grants us all that we need in the way of light and protection.

God gives us grace for every step, and at our destination He overwhelms us with glory. In His thinking grace and glory go together. God is good: "He will withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly". It would seem that we are meant to associate the thought of grace with the "shield" and that of glory with the "sun".

A third assurance of blessing in this psalm concludes the prayer and the entire psalm: "O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in you!" This is our only fitting response to all that the psalm reveals of God and His ways with us.

Can we trust in God in troubles and trials? That is the hardest test for the flesh, but for the sincere believer it means peace and joy.

Let us ask ourselves: Do we, in our own lives, fulfil the conditions for the three blessings mentioned in this psalm? (vv. 5.6.13). Are we truly "blessed" in this sense?

For His part, God will carry out all that He has promised, and see it fulfilled. May He be glorified in our Lord Jesus Christ both now and for ever!

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 21:1-13 · 1 Timothy 1:1-7
