Thoughts on the Gospel of John (15)

Following Jesus Christ is the subject of the section under consideration in John chapter 1. Let us recall how it started: beholding Jesus, listening to what was said of Him, following Him to a secluded place, seeing where He dwells and staying with Him.

We now see the first effects of such decisive discipleship: the wish to win others over for Him. Andreas did not go to distant places, but began with his own family, his brother Simon. After spending some time with Jesus, he was fully convinced that Jesus was the Messiah. Many had been waiting for Him, including Andreas and his brother Simon.

Andreas now brought his brother into contact with Jesus. It was the best thing he could for him. And Simon was welcome. Normally Simon was only too ready to speak, but here he is silent; it is the Son of God who speaks, revealing that He has known him from his birth. Then He gave him a new name.

The right to change a name presumes ownership and authority. By giving Simon another name, He makes it clear that he now belongs to Him. Peter thus learns that, at the start of his spiritual life, the Lord is aware of his life as a sinner, yet He calls him His own.

Do you have a "new name" by which you lead your life with Christ?

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
