The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote - Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Galilee? Philip said to him, Come and see.

Two days after His baptism the Lord Jesus set out to go from the region of the Jordan to Galilee. Others were also possibly on their way home. It was, at any rate, not by chance that Jesus met Philip and "found" him.

"Follow me!" means more than merely requesting someone's company. The call here was from a teacher who had come from God. For those who are called there is a chance and also a promise, but also a responsibility and self-renunciation.

Philip was the fourth disciple in that hitherto small group. The word "we" in the brief news he gave Nathanael shows that he counted himself among them.

Nathanael came from Cana in Galilee (ch.21, v. 2). He was obviously well acquainted with the Old Testament scriptures, or Philip would not have mentioned Moses and the prophets. He believed in the glory of a Messiah, as the Old Testament described Him. But it was too much to expect him to accept that a Messiah coming from the village of Nazareth in Galilee, Bethlehem indeed, but not Nazareth.

How often people are prejudiced when they hear Jesus spoken of! The eldest son of Joseph's family was said to be the Son of God? Was that possible? It is indeed. Whoever wishes to get to know Him better is welcome to "come and see".
