Why did John record such a commonplace conversation...

Jesus said to them, What do you seek? They said to him, Rabbi, (Teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see.
John 1:38.39

Why did John record such a commonplace conversation in his gospel? Similar things can be heard nowadays in many a fleeting encounter.

Here it concerns one of the first recorded sayings of Jesus Christ, for which we can be truly thankful. Until then two men had been following John the Baptist. But to them he had pointed out Jesus, the Son of God. And now they wanted to be near Him, following Him.

Important people today have a full calendar. We have to make an appointment to be able to speak to them; even then their time is limited. And a meeting rarely takes place in their own home. But those who seek Christ, the Son of God, have His undivided attention. Are you in search of God? If so, you can certainly reckon on an answer.

Those two men were careful: they did not believe any rumour. They had heard great things of Jesus, but they wanted to form their own impression of Him. The Lord answered their questions unreservedly, in contrast to the ways of the world. If you want certainty about God, the invitation of the Lord Jesus applies equally to you: "Come and see!" He assures you: "The one who comes to me I will by no means cast out" (John 6:37)

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 8:1-18 · 2 Timothy 4:9-22

However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
