What grace and comfort are to be found in these...

I am the bright and morning star. Surely I am coming quickly.
Revelation 22:16.20

What grace and comfort are to be found in these words for the children of God! We can be sure that this world's gloomy night, through which we have to go, is far advanced. The moral and spiritual darkness of our age is frightening - but the Lord will come soon, to take His redeemed to the Father's house.

In the Old Testament such anticipation was unknown: believing Israelites expected their Messiah to redeem Israel and restore the kingdom (cf. Luke 24:21; Acts 1:6). We know that when that day comes these events will actually come about; but beforehand Christ must come in judgment and "thoroughly clean out his threshing floor" (Matthew 3:12).

Before the judgments take place, the morning star; Jesus, our beloved Lord, will appear as the herald of that day. His bride is already looking out for Him, longingly calling, "Come, Lord Jesus!" v. 20).

Living expectation of the Lord Jesus brings about practical sanctification, devotion to Him and patient faithfulness in this time of waiting.

If we love the Lord Jesus, we shall look forward to His coming. But supposing we are conformed to the world and earthly things fill our hearts? Perhaps we are aware of the truth of His coming in theory, but our heart no longer rejoices over it. And that will be noticeable in us. We no longer resemble servants waiting for their master (Luke 12:35-37). What a loss for us, and how distressing for Him!

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 13:1-12 · Revelation 2:18-29
