Thoughts on the Gospel of John (19)

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine.
John 2:1-3

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (19)
The second chapter of John's gospel begins with a report of Jesus' first miracle. It was performed in Cana, a city some 14 kilometres distant from Nazareth. A wedding was being celebrated there according to the Jewish custom. Such feasts usually lasted several days.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, had been invited. Whether she was related to the bridal couple, we do not know. What is striking is that, for one thing, Mary is mentioned without her husband (maybe he was already dead), and for another, she seemed to take some responsibility for the lack of wine.

The biblical report is not given simply to mention troubles that can arise on festive occasions, but also to provide spiritual instruction: no-one is in a position to ensure his fortune. At some stage human joy fades; even at the best of times perfect happiness can be spoiled.

Mary had immense trust in her son Jesus. She knew of her inability to help in this situation. It is worthy of note that she turned to her son. She did not order Him to buy some wine; she knew that the Son of God could remedy the lack. The application for us is: only the Son of God can ensure our true happiness and unfailing heavenly joy. We need to reveal what we lack by telling the Lord Jesus. He will act.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 16:1-14 · Revelation 4:1-11

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, ...

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, says to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. Jesus says to her, Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

PROVOKING POSITIVE CHANGE

Change is one event that is constant in life. Change denotes movement from one state to another. There are two categories of change: positive and negative. Due to the fact that change can either be positive or negative, Africans would say: "Change is good for the poor but bad for the rich". Change in life is...More
