Thoughts on the Gospel of John (21)

He (Jesus) said to them (the servants), Draw some out now and take it to the master of the feast. And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, Every man sets out at the beginning the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now. This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
John 2:8-11.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (21)
When Jesus lived on earth, it was the Jews' custom never to eat with unwashed hands. It was not for hygienic reasons, but purely a traditional ritual that their elders adhered to (cf. Mark 7:3 ff.). This background explains why the waterpots played a part at the marriage of Cana.

Here the Messiah performed His first miracle: He turned the water drawn from the waterpots into choice wine, an illustration of joy. Three truths regarding true, lasting joy can be learned from this miracle:

It comes only on the basis of a cleansing process. People can experience real joy only if they have a clear conscience.

It comes about through the Word of God, of which water is an illustration (cf. Ephesians 5:26). Nothing else can ensure fellowship with the Lord Jesus.

It is granted by the Lord Jesus alone, the source of eternal life and heavenly joy.

Whenever the Lord Jesus intervenes in someone's life, good ensues. Moreover, He wishes to reveal his greatness, so that we trust Him fully (v.11)

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
