Thoughts on the Gospel of John (23)

When he had made a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. And he said to those who sold doves, Take these things away! Do not make my Father's house a house of merchandise! Then his disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house has eaten me up.
John 2:15-17

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (23)
The second chapter of John's gospel presents a picture of contrasts. First, the Son of God brings joy to the celebration of a marriage, then He drives animals out of the temple area with a whip. Both events have a deeper meaning: the marriage of Cana teaches us that man is not in a position to ensure his own happiness. The second scene in Jerusalem shows that God is robbed, when people seek to make financial profit from the service of God.

In the law God had ordered that tithes in the form of money should be brought to His dwelling, if distance prevented a journey being made with animals for sacrifice. (cf. Deuteronomy 14:22 ff.). The sacrifices could then be purchased on the spot. This exception did not condone the business as practised here in the temple.

The Lord was zealous for the honour of His heavenly Father. He would not tolerate anything that detracted from it

We can learn one thing from the Lord's action: when the honour of God is at stake, tolerance and lenience are out of place. The Bible, the Word of God, is the yardstick for our judgment and the action we take. It not only requires us to be kind and merciful, but also, if necessary, to call wrong and wickedness by name and to disassociate ourselves from it.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 34:1-33 · Revelation 20:7-15

. He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only.
However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
