An English major who was involved in a conversation with a clergyman demanded clear and convincing proof that the Bible is truly the Word of God and was not written by men. The clergyman knew that the major had served in the Middle East, travelling around a lot, and asked him if he had visited Babylon. The latter at once began to tell enthusiastically what he had experienced there.

"The ruins of Babylon are teeming with wild animals that can be hunted. I applied to a sheikh for permission to hunt and for an escort of hunters who knew the district. Several Arab hunters accompanied me to the old part of the city. However, when evening fell, the Arabs packed their tents and left the ruins. I simply had to call off my hunt. The next morning I complained to the sheikh, but his response was, "Spending the night there would be too dangerous on account of the wild animals. Nobody stays there after sundown."

Thereupon the clergyman : "And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldeans' pride, ... will never be inhabited, nor will ... the Arabian pitch tents there, nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there, but wild beasts of the desert will lie there, and their houses will be full of owls; ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will caper there. The hyenas will howl in their citadels, and jackals in their pleasant palaces."

The major was flabbergasted to discover the accuracy of the prophecy made by Isaiah 2,700 years previously. He terminated the conversation - very pensively.
