An ark of bulrushes (1)

Pharaoh commanded , Every son who is born you shall cast into the river.

When she (Moses' mother) could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river bank.

Exodus 1: 22; 2: 3.

An ark of bulrushes (1)
Let us remember the extraordinary story of Moses, right at the beginning of his life in ancient Egypt. The Hebrews were slaves there, and though they were treated harshly, their numbers increased. Seeing a threat, Pharaoh decided that every boy born to them should be thrown into the river.

In one family a small boy was growing up. His mother refused to carry out the murderous order and hid the child as long as was possible. She then prepared an ark of bulrushes, covering it with asphalt and pitch to make it waterproof. She laid her precious baby in it and placed it on the river bank. What more could she do? She did all that was in her power intelligently. Anxious parents can do no more than confide their child to God's power and mercy and trust Him. God's answer surpassed their hopes. Pharaoh's daughter, who was bathing in the river, discovered the child, picked it up and was even led by divine providence to choose the baby's mother as its nurse!

This biblical account is rich in instruction for all Christian parents today. They watch anxiously over their young children, but the time comes when they have to go out into a world full of danger. What resource is there for such parents who have reason enough for their worry?

(to be concluded tomorrow)

Today‘s reading: Deuteronomy 22: 1 - 29 · Galatians 1: 10 - 24

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
