The class was learning to conjugate the verb "to be" in the present and the past. The teacher explained, "The past tense means that something is over. If I say, ʼI was illʻ, it means that I am no longer ill." The pupils gave further examples: "I was young; now I am old." "I was sad; now I am happy." "I was dead; now I am alive."

George immediately raised his hand, "Please, ma'am, you can't say, ʼI was deadʻ. When you are dead, you can't speak!" George was right. The example given was incorrect.
