Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (41)
The conversation that Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well in Sychar began very simply. But when the Lord spoke of "living water" that He could give her, the woman had difficulties, as she had earthly things in mind: her religious traditions, her daily toil and her natural basic needs. What did the spiritual, eternal things that the Son of God spoke about mean?

The water from the well stood for earthly things that can never quench the thirst of the human soul. Money, pleasures, career, or duties and relationships can give temporary, contentment, but no permanent satisfaction.

"Living water", on the other hand, has a great effect on a person's life. For one thing, soul thirst is quenched, for another, it is like a fountain that makes the bubbling water flow back to its source. When someone receives new life (cf. the Lord's words to Nicodemus in chapter 3) and the Holy Spirit, his soul cannot find contentment and fulfilment on earth, but only in heaven where his home is in his relationship with God Himself.

Those who know this are happy people indeed!
