Thoughts on the Gospel of John (45)

The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he. And at this point his disciples came, and they marvelled that he talked with a woman; yet no-one said, What do you seek? or, Why are you talking with her?
John 4: 25 - 27.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (45)
The Samaritan woman had asked the question on her mind, "Where is the right place to worship?" but she had not properly understood what Jesus had said. She was comforted by the thought that the expected Messiah would clarify everything. She sensed that she could not get along without Him.

Do you remember what Jesus had spoken about? He had told the woman of an extraordinary blessing, the living water that would spring up into everlasting life. He had also pricked her conscience, for she was living in sin. Now He had indicated that a change was coming.

The woman longed for the Messiah. How moving it was, when He revealed Himself to her: "I who speak to you am he." She had identified Him as a Jew. She acknowledged Him to be a prophet from His words that exposed her. But the fact that that thirsty traveller was the Messiah impressed her, even if she could not yet grasp it.

Their conversation was interrupted by the return of the disciples from shopping. They were surprised to find their Master speaking to a strange woman. If they knew the subject of their conversation they would have been more amazed. They remained silent and kept their distance. It is regrettable if we wonder at Jesus' sayings and actions without taking them to heart.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 24: 1 - 23 · Philippians 2: 19 - 30

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

As a bona fide member of the Kingdom of God, you must be a proof of His power to save. Matthew 1:21 says Jesus shall save His people from sin.

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
