Thoughts on the Gospel of John (47)

In the meantime his disciples urged him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But he said to them I have food to eat of which you do not know. Therefore the disciples said to one another, Has anyone brought him anything to eat? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work.
John 4: 31 - 34.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (47)
The Samaritan woman left everything behind and went into the city. Meanwhile the twelve disciples took the opportunity to urge their Master to eat something. Their encouragement was certainly well meant. But just as happened at the temptation in the wilderness, when the devil told the Lord to satisfy His hunger, the Lord pointed out that He had other food here that always had priority. He did not deny man's earthly needs, but availed Himself of the occasion to teach His disciples spiritual things.

The disciples were perplexed: where had Jesus obtained food? Who had brought Him something to eat? We notice that, once again, the disciples did not ask the Lord Himself, but wondered amongst themselves. Like so many people today, they failed to put their questions directly to Jesus, the Son of God.

The Lord did not leave His disciples in ignorance. For Him the object of speaking to the Samaritan woman about her soul's salvation was refreshment indeed. Amid all the pressure of daily life the Lord derived inner strength from His relationship with his Father. His desire was to be obedient to Him as a Man on earth and accomplish His Father's will.

. This well-known, but often neglected verse of Scripture was Jesus' principle for His life. If we make it our own, too, we shall discover that we lack nothing.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 2 Samuel 1: 17 - 27 · Colossians 3: 12 - 17

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
