Thoughts on the Gospel of John (53)

As he (the nobleman) was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Your son lives! Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed and his whole household. This again is the second sign Jesus did when he had come out of Judea into Galilee.
John 4: 51 - 54.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (53)
The nobleman's son was so seriously ill that there was no more hope for him. But Jesus assured the anxious father, "Your son lives." Had he died in the meantime? No, the power of Jesus Christ had halted oncoming death.

Life is what mankind generally needs today. Since the Fall, he has been infected by sin, is "ill" and faces eternal death. No therapy will help; man needs the forgiveness of his guilt and eternal life. This subject is expounded by the Lord Jesus in the following chapters.

Sustaining the life of the nobleman's son was solely due to the Son of God's power, who has . Yet the man seeking help needed genuine faith, not works. Let us observe how his faith grew.

First he believed that Jesus could heal his son (vv. 47.49).

Then he believed what Jesus said before he had seen the miracle of healing (v.50).

From then on he believed in Christ. His faith brought about complete dependence on Christ.

Finally, we read that even his entire household also believed (v. 53).

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 1 Kings 4: 1 - 20 · John 5: 1 - 9

FALSE PROPHETS AND THEIR PROPHECIES-FOOLISH PROPHETS

The word of Jehovah came unto me, saying: Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say unto them that prophesy out of their own heart, Hear ye the word of Jehovah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow after their own spirit, and have seen nothing!...More

EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE

Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More

FOR CHRIST'S SAKE DON'T!

A negative change is generally abhorred by men. Everyone craves progress. We always desire to keep ascending the ladder of success. No one wants to make a u-turn in the journey of greatness. The greatest journey whose end has the greatest significance is the journey to Heaven. This journey is only made in Jesus...More
