The assurance of forgiveness (1)
During the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) the Russians had erected a big military hospital to the north of Sebastopol, where their sick and wounded could be cared for. One day a man was admitted severely wounded. The expression on his face showed how he was suffering. A deaconess tried to get him to speak several times, but in vain. He lay silent and motionless on his bed.

Some day later he finally broke his silence. Warily he asked the sister to answer a question that troubled him. "What is it?" the deaconess asked. "Can anyone," he inquired, "be certain that God has forgiven his sins?"

The sister was taken aback. She had never thought about that question and did not know how to reply to the dying man, who looked at her with fear in his eyes. She felt she could not evade the question and could only help him with the Word of God. So she went to her room, fetched her Bible and sought an answer. Without any trouble she found a number of passages, for example:

"I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake" .
