The spider’s web

The hypocrite shall perish, whose confidence shall be cut off, and whose trust is a spider's web. He leans on his house, but it does not stand. He holds it fast, but it does not endure.

The spider's web
A big spider's web has been woven between high grasses near the ground. Covered with frost, it is a magnificent sight. What fragile work! Just a light touch will destroy it.

A friend of the patriarch Job used this illustration to speak about "all who forget God" (v.13). He stated that their confidence will be "a spider's web". Resting on one's own merits to get right with God will prove useless.

The prophet Isaiah takes up the image of the spider's web to speak of sinners. How could one make a garment from a spider's web? That is precisely what someone tries to do to make his own good works valid before God. Such garments are truly not sufficient to hide our sins. Faith in Jesus alone makes us righteous in God's sight and clothes us in "garments of salvation" and .
