Thoughts on the Gospel of John (61)

The Father has given him (the Son) authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming, in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice and come forth - those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the Father who sent me.
John 5: 26 - 30.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (61)
The subject here is still the voice heard by the dead, but in a different situation from that in vv. 24 and 25.

Here it is the Son of man who calls the dead; previously it was the Son of God (although He is the same Person).

Here all the dead hear the voice; previously it was only those who are made alive.

Here the dead come forth from the graves; previously it was said that they pass into life.

Here the Son of man is given power to judge; previously it stated that He had life in Himself to make alive.

Here it is a matter of the future; previously the present was meant.

We note that here, once again, all who are physically dead come into question. All will rise again, but there will be two distinct resurrections: a resurrection for life and one for judgment. From other scriptures we know that the resurrection of life takes place about one thousand years before the resurrection of judgment. . Whoever is raised later, will be confronted with Christ as the just, unbribable Judge, a truly undesirable fate.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 2 Kings 6: 18 - 33 · John 19: 1 - 6

FALSE PROPHETS AND THEIR PROPHECIES-THE FALSE PROPHET

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the...More

EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE

Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More

PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS

Read:
that when he cried to the Lord, the Lord healed him. This is another testimony of someone who believed in the God that answers prayers. May prayer for someone using this devotional is that as you cry unto God today, He will answer you as He answered Hannah, Jabez and Elijah in Jesus'...More

The bankruptcy that saves

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - for the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease for ever.

You were not redeemed with silver or gold from your aimless conduct but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and...More
