Thoughts on the Gospel of John (64)

You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me. But you are not willing to come to me that you may have life. I do not receive honour from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
John 5: 39 - 43.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (64)
Jesus has named four witnesses to testify that He is truly the Son of God: John the Baptist, His own works, the Father and the scriptures.

What value the Lord places on the Old Testament scriptures! They are the crowning witness, so to speak. To a certain extent the Jews had studied these scriptures intently. What a pity that they did not discover the Person that Scripture points to, in whom alone life can be obtained: Jesus Christ! Whoever reads the Bible purely rationally, without seeking the relationship to Jesus as Saviour and Lord, bypasses the saving power of the Word.

"Honour from men" is this world's motive power. The Lord, by contrast, acts from totally other motives, inviting people to come to Him to receive God's blessing, not because He seeks honour from them. Jesus clearly referred here to a prophetic word from the Old Testament: . He is undoubtedly the Messiah, the One to come. But He was not wanted.

One day another will come in His name. He will elevate himself over all and even be worshipped as God - the antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2: 3.4). He will fulfil man's desire for fame and power, and thus be the exact opposite of Christ, the Redeemer.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 2 Kings 18: 26 - 37 · 1 John 4: 15 - 21

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
