If the continents were paper

God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3: 16.

If the continents were paper
Visiting a small village by the sea in Holland, a Christian spoke at length on the love of God before an audience composed of simple people. His vocabulary was complicated, and the listeners had difficulty in understanding everything. As soon as he had finished, an elderly Christian, a former fisherman, stood up. He had often spoken of God's love in his neighbourhood. He was respectfully called "John, the beloved", as an allusion to the apostle John, who liked to call himself .

The old fisherman simply said, "If all the seas in the world were full of ink, and all the continents were made of paper, and if all the blades of grass were pens, that would not be enough to describe the love of God."

Those few words had a profound impact on a young listener. Years later in a meeting, being an evangelist, he took up for his message the illustration of John the beloved to explain the text John 3: 16. It was the means of the conversion of an opera singer, who, impressed by God's love, composed a hymn, also taking up the brief sermon of the old fisherman.

The Bible reveals things that are wonderful and profound. But it does so in simple, understandable terms. Because God wants His love to be proclaimed to all, irrespective of social distinctions. "God is love" (1 John 4: 8.16) is an extremely simple phrase, yet one of tremendous significance surpassing our comprehension.

Today‘s reading: Ezekiel 16: 35 - 63 · Psalms 119: 113 - 128

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
