Thoughts on the Gospel of John (70)

It was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose, because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. Then they willingly received him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
John 6: 17 - 21.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (70)
Twelve disciples were rowing hard in darkness on their way to Capernaum in the storm-tossed waves on the lake. Some of them were fishermen; they knew exactly where they were: some two miles from the shore. The sudden appearance of a figure approaching them terrified them. They had never experienced such a thing before. Had they forgotten that a few hours previously they had witnessed the miraculous increase of the five loaves?

What do we reckon with when we are in trouble? Is it with the Lord, who constantly watches His own and acts for their benefit? How often we resemble the disciples and forget that the Lord Jesus has ever helped wonderfully in difficult situations!

"It is I." This is not just the call of some acquaintance making his presence known. It is the "I am who I am", the eternal, unchanging God, as He revealed Himself to Moses . If only we were more aware of the One with whom we have to do! The Son of God is not yet King over all the earth; that is still to come. Nevertheless He has everything under control, even our life's storms.

"Do not be afraid!" Whoever has Jesus with him on his life's voyage can confidently go on towards the heavenly goal.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: Ezekiel 26: 1 - 21 · Psalms 128: 1 - 6

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
