By God’s commission the angel Gabriel came to Nazareth to...

The angel said to her (Mary), The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1: 35.

By God's commission the angel Gabriel came to Nazareth to the virgin Mary. He brought her the wondrous news that she was to be the mother of the Messiah. The angel said of Him: "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give him, the throne of his father David. And he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end" (v. 32.33).

Every Jewish woman must have longed to become the mother of the Redeemer. Now it was to be Mary's privilege. But one question troubled Mary: how could that happen? She was engaged to Joseph, but they did not live together: she was still a virgin.

The angel's explanation is in the verse above: the Holy Spirit would bring about this unique miracle, so that the Child to be born would be holy, in contrast to all other people who were born with a sinful nature (cf. ; Psalm 51:5). It was God's will that His Son should become Man in this way, so that He should be pure and holy. Jesus could take upon Himself the sins of others and undergo God's punishment only because He was Himself sinless.

The basis of our faith and of Christianity as a whole consists in our acknowledging the eternal deity and sinless humanity of the Lord Jesus. Because Jesus Christ is the eternal God and the one sinless Man, His atoning death is of infinite value for God. We cannot explain it, but we accept it by faith, for God's Word states it.

(to be concluded tomorrow)

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
