Groping about in the dark

Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.
Jonah 1:6.

Groping about in the dark
When someone feels helpless, being void of any ideas when trying to come to terms with a problem, he is, metaphorically speaking, groping about in the dark. It is improbable that he will ever succeed, unless by pure chance.

The prophet Jonah was on a ship that was in dire trouble out at sea. The sailors were calling on their gods in their fear. When nothing availed, the captain went up to Jonah, saying the words of today's verse: "Call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us." How little those men knew of the one true God! They tried every possible god, hoping that at least one might be able to help them.

In the days of the apostle Paul the Athenians were no better. Among the many altars in the city there was one with the inscription: "To the unknown god". They were proud of their wisdom, but one never really knew!

This is not the way to find God. The way to do so cannot come from mankind. It must come from the Bible, the Word of God, through which He Himself speaks, first through His prophets, then through His own Son, Jesus Christ, who came to earth to lead us to God.

Jesus Christ is "the way" (John 14:6). For all who know Him there is no more "groping in the dark". The way is clear.

"That they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us" (Acts 17:27).

Today's reading: Joel 2:18-3:6 · Proverbs 2:9-22
